Margaret Martin

Margaret-Anne is passionate about supporting women during the early parenting period both emotionally and with breastfeeding. She facilitates the mums and bubs group at the CCBC and is currently training to be a midwife and Australian Breastfeeding Association Counsellor.

Margaret-Anne has four children, the first born when she was 15 years old. The first three were breastfed until well over two years of age and she currently continues to feed her 1 year old.

“I am a Nyikana/Yamatji woman. I was born in the Kimberley in a town called Derby. I was born into a society and culture where breastfeeding was the only means of nutrients for an infant. Growing up I have seen mothers all share the responsibility of feeding each other’s babies. To me it is the most natural and beautiful thing between woman and child. I now realize that breastfeeding isn’t so universally accepted and although there is information out there about breastfeeding and lactation many women will find it hard to ask for that help and learn more about breastfeeding.”

Due to the age old wisdom of her grandmothers, the passing on of indigenous knowledge from generation to generation, and the bush medicine that her mothers, sisters and grandmothers (Aboriginal kinship ties) taught her, she has successfully breastfed for many years. She hopes to bring this kinship and support to all women who wish to breastfeed their children.
